The big idea of the story is accepting others and to push thru. It's directed at teens and it explores the social and mental aspects of that age. While also telling a amazing story. The premise is a kid from the indian reservations gos to a high school with mostly white people. He is shunned by his own people. He finds friends and heals the bond between him and his best friend from the reservation. We get a glimpse of what it is to be poor “Poverty doesn’t give you strength or teach you lessons about perseverance. No, poverty only teaches you how to be poor.” Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. This book also shows the difference between the two cultures.“I used to think the world was broken down by tribes,' I said. 'By Black and White. By Indian and White. But I know this isn't true. The world is only broken into two tribes: the people who are assholes and the people who are not.” Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. “Life is a constant struggle between being an individual and being a member of the community.” Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Another thing the book shows is that if you think you can't do something you probably can't. In the book he has to struggle threw his sister's death but in the end he is accepted.“Do you understand how amazing it is to hear that from an adult? Do you know how amazing it is to hear that from anybody? It's one of the simplest sentences in the world, just four words, but they're the four hugest words in the world when they're put together. You can do it.”Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. I think that he also shows that it doesn't matter your skin color you can do anything. Another reason I think the book was good is it shows people can be good.”If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing.”Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian this is a quote from the book showing my point. When the main character transfers he expects to fight a lot but he soon learns that after they throw some mean comments they accepted him. I think that throughout the book he persevered and it all worked out in the end. I recommend this book to all ages especially teens it is a short book so i did not have much to talk about but it is still a great book. .
